Before you head out to purchase your new tool chest, you will need to do some research and decide a few things.
How many tools do you have? Are you planning to buy a lot more?
You will also need to measure the space you plan to put the tool chest to make sure you do not buy anything too big. Drawer size can vary.
How big are your tools?
You will want to make sure you have the right combination of drawers, e.g. jeweler’s drivers may need a smaller, shallow drawer so they do not roll to the back and you can see them well.
Things like power tools will require deeper drawers. Do you need your chest to be extra durable? Will you be using it often? Will you be moving it?
Once you have answered these questions, you can begin to compare the below products and decide what works best for you.
We have made it easier for you to compare products by including a convenient comparison table. This will make it easy to come back for reference after you have done your initial studying and decision making; but it is important to first decide what is important to you and to understand what you are looking for, as well as know what you are looking at!

Best tool chest – Buyer’s Guide
When choosing a tool chest, you want to consider your budget, what type of and how many tools you will be storing, and the space available for placing the box.
Once you have determined the answers to these questions, you will be able to consider the appropriate choices. For instance, if you are looking to just do repairs around the house, you don’t want a bulky and heavy chest. Similarly, if you are going to need space for a large variety of tools, you will need to purchase a larger one.
Something else to consider is the material. There are both plastic and metal options. The metal has the possibility of rusting eventually, but the plastic can bend with too much weight. Also, plastic is more lightweight and can be easier to move if portability is an issue.
Since you may be considering portability, there are questions you will need to ask. Will you never move it? Will you just move it across the garage? Do you need to take it somewhere with you? Material, the presence or absence of wheels, handles, durability – these are all considerations when you are considering portability.
If you are starting out with the standard set of tools, but plan to expand, a chest that has separate pieces for purchase may be a good idea. The top chest is a nice place to start, then you will have your intermediate and bottom pieces. The top chest will usually have small drawers, the intermediate will have more variety, and the bottom will have deeper drawers with some variety. It is nice to have the whole set if you also have the variety of tools. Deep drawers are great for power tools, shallow drawers for flat tools such as wrenches, narrow drawers for small pieces, etc.
Another consideration would be the bells and whistles. Do you need a light? A top tray for flat work? How about a USB port, or some electrical outlets? For a lot of people, these extras will be unnecessary, but they are there if you need them.
Once you have reached a decision on which chest to get, you may also want to purchase drawer liners, dividers, organizing bins, foam inserts or other items to further organize and make your tools and accessories even more accessible.
